What was once a familiar sight at Paddington back in the day -Brown Boveri gas turbine 18000. Seen here on Erstfeld shed in Switzerland in dusky pink livery, and adorned with the name ‘Elisabetta’. Sept 1978.

Didcot Railway centre

Following withdrawal Brown Boveri Gas Turbine 18000 was left unloved at Swindon Works before returning to Switzerland, the Country of her manufacture, where she was used in adhesion tests before being put on static display at Vienna. Brought back to the United Kingdom she is now at Didcot, with the Great Western Society, albeit somewhat modified from her days in service with British Railways, and it will be good to see her again in the original black and silver livery carried before her repaint to green in 1957. I have built up an archive of photographs of both Gas Turbines, each locomotive having had an interesting, but perhaps not too happy a life in service.
